  • A budget amendment adding dental benefits for pregnant women enrolled in Medicaid. Good prenatal oral health improves the health of both mother and child, and decreases the chances of babies being born prematurely.
  • Deferred Compensation for Medicaid Dental Providers (HB33). The purpose of this bill was to save money and increase the number of children who have dental care.
  • Pediatric Dental Benefit Reasonable Assurance (HB33). The purpose of this bill was to increase the number of children who have access to preventive dental care, and result in fewer ER visit, fewer money spent on dental emergencies, and less pain and suffering for children struggling with poor oral health.

Our Impact

VaOHC partners held ongoing discussions with legislators and government officials about the health benefits and cost-savings of comprehensive oral health care during pregnancy throughout the 2014 session and beyond.  On September 8, 2014, in part due to these efforts, the Governor issued an emergency regulation to enhance dental benefits for pregnant women enrolled in Medicaid and FAMIS.  Check out our Medicaid Dental Benefits and Pregnancy webpage or read this news story to learn how this will impact Virginians in 2015.
