Early Dental Home

A Dental Home for Everyone

What's largest unmet medical need among U.S. children? Dental care.

Cavities strike almost 30 percent of American kids before they lose their first baby teeth. Research shows that children who start preventive dental care by age 1 had 40 percent fewer dental costs through preschool. But not all Virginia children have access to regular dental care.

We want every child – and their parents – to have a dental home where they receive regular checkups from providers who understand their needs, no matter their economic status. Because everyone needs a home, even teeth.

We recommend:
  • 6 months: Pediatrician checks at well-child visits until the child starts regular dental checkups
  • 6 months: Fluoride varnish application until age 3
  • Age 1: First dentist visit
  • Age 3: Established reliable dental home

Our program activities, like the Early Dental Home Action Team, increase the capacity of the dental workforce to provide care to vulnerable populations.
