Making Medicaid Expansion a Reality in Virginia

It is a busy and rewarding start to the summer across the Commonwealth. A few weeks ago, the Virginia legislature voted to expand Medicaid eligibility, which means, by January 1, nearly 400,000 low-income Virginians will be able to access affordable health care coverage with a very limited, extraction-only dental benefit.

Virginia Will Expand Medicaid to 300,000 Virginians

On May 30, Virginia legislature voted to expand Medicaid coverage eligibility to more than 300,000 Virginians by raising the eligible income threshold to just over $16,000 for an individual and $28,000 for parents in a family of three. Hundreds of thousands of Virginians will now have access to affordable health and mental health services, and a very limited dental benefit.

Virginia Receives C+ Grade on Oral Health

Statewide Coalition Unveils Country’s First Oral Heath Report Card

RICHMOND, VA  [November 10, 2016] – Virginia earns a C+ when it comes to oral health, according to a first-ever statewide report card issued by the Virginia Oral Health Coalition, a statewide alliance of dental and medical providers, safety net clinics, youth and family advocates, and community members working to improve oral health.

Enhancing Education and Wellness through Oral Health Integration

A medical-dental team shares their approach to improving public health by integrating oral health education into clinical curriculum and community outreach.

I recently participated in the collaborative leadership program SYNC™ with a team of fellow colleagues from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), Kay Lucas, RN, MEd, EDS, and Watson Edwards, BSN, and Lawrence Kyle, DDS, a local dentist in Blacksburg, with scholarship support from the Virginia Oral Health Coalition.  We chose to join the SYNC™ program to develop a multidisciplinary approach to improve oral health medical education, community education and, ultimately, care within communities, through interactive community outreach.

Virginia Legislators Recognize Value of Oral Health Care During Pregnancy

On Sunday, February 8, Virginia's House and Senate both released budgets that included funding for dental benefits for pregnant women enrolled in Medicaid and FAMIS MOMS.
