Health Policy Update: Virginia's 2017 Session, ACA Repeal and Medicaid

Congressional Republicans released a summary of their proposed ACA replacement. While no bill has been filed, the policy brief provides a snapshot of key components. The proposal repeals the individual mandate, makes no mention of pre-existing conditions and repeals most taxes and fees which provide funding for the components of the ACA. The proposal does not provide any details about how the Republicans will pay for the programs outlined.

Enhancing Education and Wellness through Oral Health Integration

A medical-dental team shares their approach to improving public health by integrating oral health education into clinical curriculum and community outreach.

I recently participated in the collaborative leadership program SYNC™ with a team of fellow colleagues from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), Kay Lucas, RN, MEd, EDS, and Watson Edwards, BSN, and Lawrence Kyle, DDS, a local dentist in Blacksburg, with scholarship support from the Virginia Oral Health Coalition.  We chose to join the SYNC™ program to develop a multidisciplinary approach to improve oral health medical education, community education and, ultimately, care within communities, through interactive community outreach.

New Online Resource Reinforces Integrated Care

The Virginia Oral Health Coalition (VaOHC) has put together a new resource for health providers who are interested in oral health integration: the Integration Toolkit. The toolkit is an online resources to walk you through the key steps of oral health integration.

Medals, Dental Care and System Wide Change at the Special Olympics World Games

I recently had the honor of attending the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry conference, held in conjunction with the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. It was my first exposure to either event, and each had its own distinct energy that left me feeling humbled and hungry for change.   

Outside of the Special Olympics venue, the streets buzzed with over 6,500 athletes from all over the world and hundreds of thousands of spectators waiting to watch the athletes compete.  Inside the conference, there was a different but equally invigorating energy…

Dental care important but elusive for many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities

Each February, advocates across the U.S. raise awareness about the importance of dental health. Dental issues cause thousands of lost school and work hours each year. Good home hygiene and regular, professional dental care are critical steps to maintaining optimal oral health and preventing costly and painful oral conditions. Yet, for many low-income, health-disadvantaged adults in Virginia, simple home hygiene practices and trips to the dentist remain elusive.
