About Us

Poor oral health is linked to diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, heart disease, childhood illnesses, even lost school and work hours -- yet oral health is an isolated, and often too neglected, part of health care.

The Virginia Oral Health Coalition is an alliance of hundreds of partners who believe oral health is an essential part of overall health care.

We are...

Dental providers striving to care for the whole patient, his/her children and marginalized communities.

Educators determined to enable the next generation of health care providers to practice patient-centered care that includes oral health.

Community members passionate about  finding new solutions and lowering treatment costs for one of Virginia's largest chronic health care crises.

Health care providers committed to improving the overall health of their patients by integrating oral health care and referrals into their daily practice.

We are the Virginia Oral Health Coalition - an alliance of more than 150 people and organizations striving to ensure all Virginians can access affordable, comprehensive health care that includes oral health.

Our Mission

To ensure all Virginians can access affordable, comprehensive health care that includes oral health.

We drive the Virginia Oral Health Plan which uses advocacy, public awareness and innovative new programs to:

  • Change perceptions of oral health
  • Remove known barriers between people and oral health services
  • Build an effective oral health infrastructure by ensuring that Virginia's dental health system can meet the needs of underserved populations

The Virginia Oral Health Plan was created through intense community engagement and involvement from a wide variety of stakeholders across the Commonwealth.

Our History

In 2002, Virginia ranked close to last nationally in the number of Medicaid-enrolled children who saw a dentist. In response, the Virginia Dental Association, the Virginia Department of Health and the Department of Medical Assistance Services partnered with nonprofit organizations to create an all-volunteer committee - Virginians for Increased Access to Dental Care (VIADC) - to invest in children's health and work collectively to improve access to oral health services for Virginians. VIADC successfully increased the Medicaid reimbursement rate, added many new members and updated the Virginia Oral Health Plan. The Virginia Oral Health Coalition (VaOHC) was formed in 2010 with the charge to drive the Virginia Oral Health Plan and carry on VIADC's vision.

Today, VaOHC continues to drive the Plan with a renewed vision for comprehensive health care that includes oral health. VaOHC’s work has dramatically broadened the network of oral health stakeholders in Virginia who understand that oral health is integral to overall health. VaOHC leads this ever-expanding network to affect policies and implement programs that support oral health integration and access to care, so that oral health is a part of overall health care and wellness.
