Practical Guide to Treating Dental Patients with Special Health Care Needs is a free continuing education course for dental professionals hoping to improve their ability to care for individuals with special health care needs (ISHCN). Dr. Matthew Cooke, a pediatric dentist, dental anesthesiologist, and Director of Healthy Athletes, Special Olympics of VA and PA, will present two days of case-based presentations covering several topics related to dental treatment for ISHCN, including communication, conditions with orofacial implications, risk vs. benefit, and behavioral guidance. Kami A. Piscitelli, RDH, VA Department of Health Special Needs Oral Health Coordinator, will provide a presentation regarding oral hygiene considerations for ISHCN. Teaching methods include lecture, demonstrations, and Q&A.  The speakers have no relevant financial relationships to disclose.  No prior skill level or knowledge is required to attend.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify at least one strategy for communication and/or behavioral guidance while providing treatment for ISCHN.
  2. Identify at least one chronic condition or disability and a potential orofacial implication linked to that condition.
  3. Identify at least one adaptation or modification to allow ISHCN to improve their daily oral hygiene.

Presented by the Virginia Department of Health in Partnership with the Virginia Oral Health Coalition, Virginia Dental Association Foundation, and Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Pediatric Dentistry.
