Medals, Dental Care and System Wide Change at the Special Olympics World Games

I recently had the honor of attending the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry conference, held in conjunction with the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. It was my first exposure to either event, and each had its own distinct energy that left me feeling humbled and hungry for change.   

Outside of the Special Olympics venue, the streets buzzed with over 6,500 athletes from all over the world and hundreds of thousands of spectators waiting to watch the athletes compete.  Inside the conference, there was a different but equally invigorating energy…

Kids' Coverage Matters

FAMIS provides affordable health, dental and mental health coverage to children and pregnant women living in families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but too little to afford private insurance.  Yet, over 100,000 eligible children in Virginia are not enrolled, and the program faces expiration in September 2015.

Dental care important but elusive for many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities

Each February, advocates across the U.S. raise awareness about the importance of dental health. Dental issues cause thousands of lost school and work hours each year. Good home hygiene and regular, professional dental care are critical steps to maintaining optimal oral health and preventing costly and painful oral conditions. Yet, for many low-income, health-disadvantaged adults in Virginia, simple home hygiene practices and trips to the dentist remain elusive.

Important Update to Fluoride Varnish Billing Code for Medical Providers

Our partners in primary care do an outstanding job to integrate oral health services, with key, collaborative support from the dental community. Following this, we are making partners aware of an important code change that will affect medical providers who bill Medicaid for fluoride varnish application. (There is no change for dental providers.)

Virginia Legislators Recognize Value of Oral Health Care During Pregnancy

On Sunday, February 8, Virginia's House and Senate both released budgets that included funding for dental benefits for pregnant women enrolled in Medicaid and FAMIS MOMS.
